Thinking about therapy can feel like standing at the edge of cold water. You know it might be good for you, but the unknown makes you hesitate. Let's make it less unknown.
What therapy actually is
Therapy is a confidential conversation with a trained professional whose only job, in that hour, is you. It is not lying on a couch being judged. It is a space to be honest, to be heard, and to learn tools for the things weighing on you.
What the first session is like
The first session is mostly getting to know each other. The therapist will ask what brought you in and a little about your life. You are allowed to go slowly. You do not have to share everything on day one. It is okay to say, "I've never done this before and I'm nervous."
What it costs in Nigeria
Costs vary widely:
- Free — helplines and some NGO and community services.
- Subsidised — many government and teaching hospitals.
- Paid — private practices, often with a range of fees.
Our Find Support directory lets you filter by cost, format, and city so you can find something that fits your life and budget.
How to start
- Decide what you'd like help with — even loosely.
- Choose a format: in person, or online from home.
- Pick one option from the directory and send a first message.
You do not have to be in crisis to deserve support. Curiosity is reason enough. The bravest part is often just the first message — and you are more ready than you think.
Uwam is a peer-support and awareness community, not a clinic. We connect you to independent providers; please verify their credentials directly.
